Dr. Meghna Malhotra is currently Associate Professor in the Department of Commerce at Hansraj College, University of Delhi. She obtained her post graduate degree in Commerce from Department of Commerce (Delhi School of Economics) and M. Phil as well as Ph.D. from Department of Business Economics, University of Delhi. She has been teaching in University of Delhi since 2001. She has worked with Shaheed Sukhdev College of Business Studies, University of Delhi over a period of ten years. She has published in a number of reputed journals and books. She has made presentations in several international and national conferences. Out of these two papers were awarded as best papers and two papers were presented in World Finance Conference.

About The Book

This book explores the spillover effects of FDI on the performance of manufacturing firms in India for the period 2000-01 to 2009-2010. This time period is very important in the economic history of India as over this period India experienced a double digit rate of growth and thus it is a suitable phase to investigate the impact of FDIs on the manufacturing firms in India.The13 manufacturing industries covered in this study are those in which FDI flows have been maximum over the post reform period according to Department of Industrial Promotion and Policy and Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (CSO). The book has eight chapters and is organized as follows. Chapter one introduces the topic of research and gives motivation, objectives and research methodology used in this study in brief and lastly gives the chapter outline. Chapter two reviews the literature on the spillover effects of foreign direct investments. Both international and Indian studies on spillover effects of foreign direct investment are reviewed in this chapter. An attempt is made to cover theoretical as well as empirical work done in this area. Chapter three discusses the objectives, hypotheses and the research methodology used in the study in detail along with the construction of variables, sample size and the data sources used for this study. Chapter four covers the theoretical background of spillovers from foreign firms to domestic firms. It also includes measuring spillovers through the horizontal, backward and forward linkages and at last the comparison of horizontal, backward and forward spillovers between foreign and domestic firms and over 13 industries under study. Chapter five includes the comparative analysis of the performance of the domestic firms and foreign firms in terms of productivity. Using level of output and partial productivity measures namely labor productivity and capital productivity it is studied whether the foreign firms show higher productivity than domestic firms and are there signs of productivity spillovers from the foreign to domestic firms. Chapter six deals with the comparison of embodied and disembodied technological progress in the foreign firms and domestic firms and provide an evidence of whether there are embodied and disembodied technological spillovers from foreign firms to domestic firms. Chapter seven estimates and analyses the determinants of spillovers and aims at studying whether these determinants of spillovers can categorize firms into foreign and domestic category. In Chapter eight conclusions for each of the research objectives have been discussed along with policy implications and scope for future research in this area. It is hoped that this book will be highly useful for the academicians, researchers and economic analysts.
