Dr. Krishnendra Meena teaches Political Geography and Geopolitics at the School of International Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. His research interests and publications include issues of Geopolitics, Borders and Indian Ocean.

About The Book

The book is the outcome of doctoral research by Dr. Meena conducted at the Jawaharlal Nehru University, and the current version draws substantially from the doctoral dissertation. The book explores reasons for continued British presence in the South Atlantic Ocean since 1945. It underlines that apart from the core issue of sovereignty of the Falklands/ Malvinas islands, the British covet the islands for the islands' facilitating role in the huge British Antarctic Programme. Recent explorations in the Exclusive Economic Zone of the islands has yielded hydrocarbon resources, which through generation of licenses have become a constant source of income for the inhabitants. British claims on the Antarctic Territory though frozen through the Antarctic Treaty of 1959 also play a major role in the armed presence. The book adopts a critical geopolitics approach to understand the geopolitical manouevring by the major stakeholders in the South Atlantic region.
