Author Profile

Arthur Wallace is a distinguished scholar, global travel ethnographer, and pioneering voice in the field of contemporary cultural geography. Armed with a Ph.D. in Cultural Anthropology and Heritage Management and backed by over two decades of field research, Dr. Wallace has dedicated his academic life to exploring the complex intersection between ancient sacred traditions and modern tourism. His extensive qualifications extend far beyond the classroom. As a former senior consultant for international heritage preservation initiatives and a frequent lecturer at global tourism summits, he has spent years mapping out the world’s most sacred paths from the high-altitude monasteries of Tibet to the ancient pilgrimage trails of Europe and India. His rare blend of rigorous academic methodology and deep field immersion allows him to examine not just the economic mechanics of travel, but the profound human longing for spiritual transformation. In his groundbreaking book, Religious Tourism, Arthur Wallace delivers the definitive guide to one of the fastest-growing and oldest sectors of global travel. Far from a standard travelogue, this comprehensive text bridges the gap between historical reverence and modern industry realities.

About The Book

Religious Tourism explores one of the oldest, most resilient, and profoundly transformative forms of human mobility. Far from being a static relic of the past, religious tourism has evolved into a dynamic, multidimensional global phenomenon that seamlessly blends ancient faith with postmodern commercialism, technological innovation, and cultural curiosity. This comprehensive volume bridges the deep divide between sacred tradition and the business of modern hospitality, serving as the definitive blueprint for understanding why billions of people continue to cross borders in search of the divine. The book unpacks the complex, evolving motivations that drive today’s travellers. The line between a traditional "pilgrim" driven by devout piety and a modern "tourist" seeking heritage and personal growth has blurred. This text tackles that intersection head-on, investigating how ancient routes—from the historic trails of Christianity and Islam to sacred sites across Asia—adapt to an influx of visitors who may not share the native faith but seek a deep, transformative experience. By charting the shift from packaged pilgrimages to highly personalized, authentic journeys, the book reveals how the search for identity anchors the modern travel industry. It also bravely expands the definition of "sacred journeys," looking at how quasi-religious devotion manifests in secular spaces like music festivals, sports arenas, and culinary pilgrimages. What makes this book powerful is its cross-disciplinary rigor. It synthesizes perspectives from anthropology, religious studies, tourism management, and sociology to offer a holistic worldview. Rich with international case studies—ranging from the Sufi festivals of Morocco and ancient shrines in China to modern faith-based enterprise models in the West—it offers a global masterclass in heritage preservation and visitor psychology. This book is a vital asset for researchers, students, destination managers, and religious educators looking to master the delicate equilibrium between preserving the sacred integrity of the world’s holiest places and welcoming the global community.
