Author Profile

Nicolas H. Hart (PhD), is an Associate Professor of Clinical Kinesiology and a leading researcher in human movement science. For over fifteen years, he has bridged the gap between academic research and practical physical education. Dr. Hart serves as the Director of the Human Performance Laboratory at the Institute of Sport and Movement Sciences, where his work focuses on pediatric biomechanics and the neuromuscular benefits of active play. A former collegiate athlete and certified strength and conditioning specialist, Dr. Hart has dedicated his career to optimizing how children and young adults move, learn, and grow. His pioneering research emphasizes that structured play is not just a recreational activity, but a fundamental biological necessity for optimal musculoskeletal development. He is a frequent keynote speaker at global physical education conferences and serves as a consultant for national youth sports organizations. Dr. Hart lives in the Pacific Northwest with his family, where he spends his free time hiking, coaching youth soccer, and designing active community spaces. Physiology of Play synthesizes his lifetime of research, offering educators and practitioners a definitive, science-backed framework for teaching movement. Blending his extensive background in clinical research with a lifelong passion for youth sports, Hart’s visionary text redefines play not just as a recreational activity, but as a deeply calculated science. Through detailed anatomical maps and kinesiological analysis, Physiology of Play teaches educators, clinicians, and coaches exactly how the body's skeletal and muscular systems collaborate during physical activity. Hart's overarching goal in this work is to modernize physical education. By providing practical, scientifically-backed methodologies, he empowers readers to design movement frameworks that prevent injury, enhance physical resilience, and foster cognitive development across all age groups.

About The Book

The world of human movement is often compartmentalised. Anatomy books dissect the body into isolated structures. Kinesiology texts focus strictly on the mechanics of motion. Physical education curricula frequently privilege performance and sport over the underlying science. Yet, in the lived experience of a child chasing a ball, a dancer leaping across a stage, or an athlete navigating a field, these disciplines merge into a seamless, joyful phenomenon: play. Kinesiology is the scholarly study of human movement, and biomechanics is one of the many academic subdisciplines of kinesiology. Biomechanics in kinesiology involves the precise description of human movement and the study of the causes of human movement. Physiology of Play: Integrating Anatomy, Kinesiology, and Physical Education was born out of a desire to bridge these academic silos. It serves as a comprehensive guide to understanding how the human body moves, why it thrives on movement, and how to teach it effectively. Designed for students, educators, coaches, and clinicians, this book reframes "play" not merely as a recreational pastime, but as a critical physiological necessity and the ultimate expression of human biomechanics. Physiology of Play: Integrating Anatomy, Kinesiology, and Physical Education is the ultimate structural blueprint for understanding the human body in motion. This comprehensive text bridges the gap between pure biological science and functional physical performance, making it an essential resource for educators, trainers, and movement specialists. This text is designed for students in an undergraduate structural kinesiology course after completing courses in human anatomy and physiology. While primarily utilized in physical education, human performance, movement science, exercise science, athletic training, physical therapy and massage therapy curriculums, it is often used as a continuing reference by other clinicians and educators in addressing musculoskeletal concerns of the physically active. Applied kinesiologists, athletic trainers, athletic coaches, physical educators, physical therapists, occupational therapists, health club instructors, strength and conditioning specialists, personal trainers, massage and manual therapists, physicians and others who are responsible for evaluating, diagnosing, improving and maintaining the muscular strength, endurance, flexibility and overall health of individuals will benefit from this text.
