Author Profile

Dr. Rick Ferkel is an acclaimed educator, sports scientist, and leading authority in physical education and athletic development. With decades of research and hands-on coaching experience, he bridges the gap between complex exercise physiology and practical, real-world sports performance. His groundbreaking insights help athletes, coaches, and sports scientists maximize human potential safely and efficiently. He is a dedicated professor and researcher specializing in kinesiology, motor learning, and physical literacy; expert in translating cutting-edge biomechanics into actionable training methodologies;trusted advisor to competitive athletes and coaching staffs across multiple sporting disciplines;frequent speaker at international sports science conferences, championing evidence-based fitness education. In The Science of Sports Training, Dr. Ferkel delivers his masterclass on athletic optimization. He dismantles outdated training myths to reveal the exact physiological principles that drive elite speed, strength, and endurance. Whether you are an Olympic-level coach or a dedicated fitness enthusiast, Dr. Ferkel provides the definitive blueprint to unlock peak physical performance and accelerate recovery.

About The Book

The Science of Sports Training offers a comprehensive guide to athletic excellence, breaking down physical mastery into core components like strength, speed, endurance, and flexibility. It covers the essential physiological systems, including the oxygen transport system, working muscles, and hormonal responses that drive adaptation and growth. Finally, the book outlines the structured training process, from planning and programming to specific techniques for developing endurance and speed. The Science of Sports Training offers an evidence-based approach to athletic development, covering essential topics such as strength, speed, endurance, and physiological systems. It provides a comprehensive guide for coaches and athletes on planning, training processes, and the science behind optimizing human performance. The science of sports training focuses on how the body adapts to exercise through principles like overload, specificity, progression, and recovery. It combines biomechanics, physiology, and psychology to improve performance by targeting strength, endurance, speed, and skill while preventing injury. Effective training balances stress and rest, uses measurable goals, and tailors programs to an athlete’s individual needs, ensuring steady, long-term improvement. The current conceptualization of science of training, basic principles of training theories as well as specific safe methods of strength and conditioning for athletes, have been summarized in Science of Sports Training. The major theme of this book aims to provide scientific basis for the concept of adaptation as a law of training. Indeed, proper exercise, sport-specific drills and/or regular physical and psychological load is a very powerful stimulus for adaptation (i.e., organisms’ adjustment in its environment). Accordingly, the major objective of athletes’ preparation should be inducing specific adaptations in order to improve sport performance via: (a) carefully planned; (b) skillfully executed; and (c) goal-oriented training programs. From practical perspectives, at least four important features of the adaptation process should be considered by a coach in order to make training programs effective and most importantly safe for the athletes. Otherwise, athletes may experience and express various forms of maladaptive responses to training and associated performance saturation/deterioration with high risk for sport-related traumatic injuries.
