Author Profile

Matt Bridge is a leading authority in physical education pedagogy, human movement analytics, and sports science. With over two decades of experience spanning academic research, elite athletic coaching, and frontline educational innovation, he stands at the forefront of modernizing how educators measure, analyze, and foster physical literacy.Matt holds a Ph.D. in Sports Science and Pedagogy, specializing in the intersection of motor skill acquisition and data-driven performance metrics. He earned his Master’s degree in Education (M.Ed.) with a focus on Curriculum Design, bridging the gap between complex biomechanical data and everyday classroom instruction. Throughout his career, Matt has served as a university professor, senior curriculum consultant for national education boards, and an advisor to youth sports organizations worldwide. His pioneering research on formative assessment models has been published in numerous peer-reviewed journals, including the Journal of Teaching in Physical Education and the International Journal of Computer Science in Sport. As technology increasingly reshapes the educational landscape, Matt has dedicated his work to empowering teachers. He bridges the gap between traditional gym pedagogy and the digital age, helping educators leverage wearable tech, motion analysis apps, and cloud-based analytics to create inclusive, high-impact learning environments. In Modern Guide to PE Assessment and Analytics, Matt distils his extensive academic expertise and practical coaching insights into a definitive handbook. His evidence-based approaches provide physical educators with actionable, scalable frameworks to track student progress, justify the cognitive value of physical education, and ultimately inspire lifelong physical well-being.

About The Book

For decades, assessment in physical education (PE) was treated as an afterthought—often reduced to attendance, uniform checks, or subjective grading that failed to reflect true student growth. Modern Guide to PE Assessment and Analytics fundamentally shatters this outdated paradigm. It delivers a powerful, comprehensive framework that elevates physical education from a traditional participation-based class into a sophisticated, data-informed academic discipline. This is not a simple "how-to" recipe book. It is an essential, forward-thinking manifesto and actionable toolkit engineered for K-12 physical educators, athletic directors, curriculum developers, and sports scientists. The book bridges the critical gap between complex learning analytics and the high-energy, kinetic reality of the modern gym and playing field. Traditional PE assessments heavily favor natural athletes while leaving struggling students behind. This guide transforms the evaluation process by focusing on the whole child, using continuous performance-based models, formative feedback, and objective data to ensure every student achieves physical literacy. By merging traditional assessment foundations with cutting-edge digital toolkits, this book answers the most urgent questions facing modern educators: How do we measure what matters? How do we leverage data to motivate, rather than discourage? And how do we prove the tangible value of PE to stakeholders and policymakers?
