Author Profile

Harold Myers is a distinguished environmental scientist, veteran conservationist, and pioneering voice in sustainable travel. With over twenty-five years of field research and academic excellence, Myers has dedicated his life to exploring the delicate intersection between human wanderlust and ecological preservation. His seminal book, Ecotourism, stands as the definitive blueprint for modern travelers, industry leaders, and conservationists striving to protect the planet’s most vulnerable ecosystems. Myers’ authority on the subject is anchored in a rigorous academic background and decades of hands-on experience. He has done Ph.D. in Environmental Science & Ecological Economics from the Yale School of the Environment, where his groundbreaking dissertation focused on the economic impacts of community-based tourism in rainforest biomes; Master of Science in Conservation Biology from the University of Oxford; Senior Advisory Board Member for the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC), where he helps shape international policies and green certifications; Former Consultant for the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), advising developing nations on how to build sustainable tourism infrastructures that alleviate poverty while protecting biodiversity. Unlike traditional academics who remain confined to lecture halls, Myers is a seasoned explorer. His research has taken him from the dense canopy of the Amazon basin to the fragile marine ecosystems of the Galápagos Islands, and the community-led conservancies of East Africa.

About The Book

The word "ecotourism" is often thrown around as a marketing buzzword—a shiny sticker slapped onto traditional travel packages to soothe the conscience of the modern traveler. But true ecotourism is something much more profound: it is a radical, ethical imperative designed to act as the ultimate antithesis to mass tourism. For anyone seeking to understand this delicate balance between exploration and preservation, the book Ecotourism stands as the definitive global blueprint. The text completely strips away the greenwashed veneer of the travel industry. It delivers a powerful, uncompromising examination of how human curiosity can be harnessed to protect—rather than destroy, the planet's most fragile ecological and social systems. At the heart of the book is a vital reality: tourism is never neutral. Every footstep in a protected reserve, every dollar spent in a rural village, and every interaction with local wildlife ripples through an ecosystem. This book does not merely celebrate the ideals of green travel; it actively wrestles with the complex, systemic contradictions that plague it in practice. The text serves as a cross-disciplinary bridge, weaving together insights across geography, environmental science, economics, and biology. The volume introduces critical, modern frameworks necessary for navigating the climate realities of today. Ecotourism is an essential text because it addresses the core paradox of our globalized world: how do we love wild spaces without loving them to death? Whether exploring how tourism revenues fund salaries, or analyzing the delicate community dynamics within vulnerable wetlands like the Sundarbans, it proves that well-governed ecotourism is a highly viable tool for global conservation. It challenges students, researchers, and global policymakers alike to stop treating the Earth as a backdrop for consumption. Instead, it teaches us to view the planet as a living, interconnected sanctuary that demands our respect, our protection, and our systemic stewardship.
