Author Profile

Joel Patterson, PhD, is a leading scholar and visionary voice at the intersection of technology, aesthetics, and contemporary culture. He currently serves as the Chair of the Department of Digital Media Culture and is a Distinguished Professor of Art History and Computational Aesthetics at the Institute for Advanced Media Studies. Dr. Patterson’s academic journey began at the University of Oxford, where he earned his Bachelor of Arts in Fine Art and Philosophy. Driven by the rapid evolution of the early internet and its impact on visual expression, he relocated to the United States to complete his Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Interactive Media at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). He later received his Doctorate in Comparative Media Studies from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). His groundbreaking doctoral dissertation, The Ghost in the Pixels: Deconstructing the Virtual Canvas, received the prestigious International Aesthetics Prize and laid the conceptual foundation for modern digital art criticism. Before fully committing to academia, Dr. Patterson spent a decade working as a Principal Creative Director and futurist in both Silicon Valley and London. He collaborated with pioneering software engineers to develop early generative art algorithms and immersive virtual reality environments. This rare blend of high-level technical expertise and deep art-historical training unique positions him to decode the complex evolution of new media. His research focuses on the philosophical implications of algorithmic curation, the role of blockchain technology in digital provenance, and the emotional resonance of artificial intelligence in generative design.

About The Book

A Companion to Digital Art is a blueprint for understanding how technology has permanently rewritten the boundaries of human creativity. This book serves as an intellectual anchor in a fast-moving discipline, bridging the profound technical intricacies of new media with the conceptual depth of contemporary art history. It is a rigorous, deeply moving exploration of what it means to create, politics, and preserve expression in a world built on ephemeral code. The text is meticulously organized into three core pillars, offering an expansive view of the medium: Histories of Digital Art: This section charts the evolution of new media, tracing its lineage from early computational experiments to its complex, often turbulent relationship with traditional institutions and mainstream art galleries. Aesthetics of Digital Art: Here, leading international theorists examine the unique philosophical, political, and gendered perspectives that define digital production, analyzing how algorithms and pixels reshape human perception. Network Cultures: A forward-looking investigation into global connectivity, exploring how the Internet, interactivity, and decentralized platforms have transformed the viewer from a passive observer into an active participant. What makes this volume incredibly powerful is its fearlessness in confronting the fragility of its subject matter. It directly tackles digital art's primary practical challenge: the terrifying reality of technological obsolescence. How do we museum-curate, document, and preserve art that could be erased forever by a simple software update or a dead network? By positioning data visualization, internet art, and virtual reality within a critical framework, A Companion to Digital Art forces us to recognize that digital creativity is not merely a modern trend, but a profound cultural shift that redefines legacy, memory, and the very nature of existence.
