Author Profile

Brent Hughes is an internationally renowned art historian, author, and educator whose life’s work has been dedicated to recontextualizing the boundaries of nineteenth-century European art. He holds a PhD in Art History from the Courtauld Institute of Art, where his groundbreaking doctoral dissertation on the socio-political undercurrents of early French Impressionism received the prestigious Prix d'Excellence in Art History. Prior to his doctoral studies, Dr. Hughes graduated summa cum laude with a Master of Letters (MLitt) in Fine Art from the University of Oxford and earned his Bachelor of Arts in History and Aesthetics from Princeton University. Over a career spanning more than two decades, Dr. Hughes has served as a senior curator at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris and as a visiting professor of art history at Yale University, the Sorbonne, and the University of Cambridge. His curated exhibitions on the radical shifts of the avant-garde have been mounted in major cultural institutions worldwide, transforming public understanding of the movement from a mere study of light and color into a complex dialogue with modernity, urbanization, and industrial rebellion. A prolific scholar, Dr. Hughes has authored over forty peer-reviewed journal articles and several award-winning monographs, including Shadows in the Light: The Politics of the Impressionist Brushstroke and The Refusal of the Salon. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (FRSA) and a frequent consultant for major auction houses and international cultural heritage organizations. In A Companion to Impressionism, Dr. Hughes brings the full weight of his academic rigor, archival discoveries, and deep curatorial expertise to deliver a definitive, magisterial overview of the movement.

About The Book

For decades, Impressionism has suffered from its own popularity. It has been pacified by commercial calendars, watered down by gift-shop prints, and reduced to a cozy, nostalgic aesthetic of sun-drenched gardens and fleeting bourgeois leisure. The 21st century's first major academic reassessment of Impressionism, providing a new generation of scholars with a comprehensive view of critical conversations. Presenting an expansive view of the study of Impressionism, this extraordinary volume breaks new thematic ground while also reconsidering established questions surrounding the definition, chronology, and membership of the Impressionist movement. Focusing on the 1860s to 1890s, this Companion explores artists who are well-represented in Impressionist studies, including Monet, Renoir, Degas, and Cassatt, as well as Morisot, Caillebotte, Bazille, and other significant yet lesser-known artists. It covers a wide variety of methodologies in addressing such topics as Impressionism's global predominance at the turn of the 20th century, the relationship between Impressionism and the emergence of new media, the materials and techniques of the Impressionists, and the movement's exhibition and reception history. The book refuses to separate the aesthetic brilliance of the canvas from the human cost of the era it depicts. By bridging the gap between social history and technical conservation, the volume breathes tangible life into the physical act of painting. It situates the Impressionist brushstroke not as a romantic accident, but as a calculated response to a rapidly changing media landscape
