Author Profile

James Wilen is a leading authority in global agrarian systems and a Professor of Applied Economics. He holds a Ph.D. in Agricultural and Resource Economics from UC Berkeley. Her career spans over two decades of research, teaching, and policy advising. Dr. Wilen has served as a senior consultant for the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). He has also advised numerous ministries of agriculture across developing economies. His research specializes in structural transformations, farm labor dynamics, and rural credit markets. Dr. Wilen's academic journey began on his family's multigenerational farm. This upbringing sparked his lifelong passion for sustainable food systems. His work bridges the gap between rigorous macroeconomic theory and practical farm management. He has published over 100 peer-reviewed articles on price policy and risk management. His pioneering models on crop insurance under climate volatility are used globally today. This book reflects Dr. Wilen's holistic approach to the discipline. He designed the text to guide students seamlessly from foundational agricultural history to complex mathematical optimization. The early chapters lay a solid groundwork inm microeconomic principles and macroeconomic linkages. The core sections offer deep insights into land tenure, resource economics, and credit systems. Finally, the concluding chapters provide practical frameworks for farm decision-making, marketing systems, and labor analysis. Dr. Wilen lives in Chicago with her family, where she maintains an active urban research farm.

About The Book

Agricultural Economics is a branch of applied economics that focuses on the production, distribution, and consumption of agricultural goods. The book equips readers with practical skills to optimize farming resources, understand agricultural markets, and navigate policies vital for food security and rural development. This comprehensive textbook provides a definitive foundation in agricultural economics, blending theoretical economic concepts with practical applications for the food, fiber, and agribusiness sectors. It is meticulously designed for undergraduate and graduate students, offering the analytical tools required to address modern challenges in the agricultural economy. Agricultural Economics explores the definition, scope, and significance of applying economic principles to agricultural production and rural development. Traces the development of the discipline from early agronomy and farm management surveys to modern applied economics. Applies fundamental economic laws-such as utility, cost theory, and market structures-specifically to farming systems. Analyzes optimal resource allocation, cost minimization, and profit maximization using factor-product and productproduct models. Examines the determinants of supply and demand for agricultural commodities, emphasizing price elasticity and market equilibrium. Addresses the sustainable management of natural resources, including water, soil, and environmental concerns in agriculture. Discusses land use, property rights, land reforms, and various tenancy systems. Analyzes human capital, labor utilization, employment dynamics, and wage determination within the agricultural workforce.
