Author Profile

Julia A. Behrman is a renowned agricultural sociologist and environmental policy expert based at the University of Freiburg in Germany. With over two decades of international fieldwork, her research centers on the intersection of rural sociology, food sovereignty, and sustainable agroecology. Her authoritative book, Agriculture in Society, examines how historical agrarian traditions are adapting to globalized, capitalist food systems and climate change. Dr. Behrman's writing is deeply influenced by her time advising the Global Alliance for the Future of Food and her advocacy for community-supported agricultural networks across Europe and the Global South. Through her work, she emphasizes that farming is not just a mechanism for food production, but the cultural and economic backbone of modern society. Her landmark book, Agriculture in Society, explores the profound, invisible ways farming dictates modern human behavior, politics, and urban development. Behrman argues that even the most tech-focused city dwellers have their daily routines, social hierarchies, and economic stability deeply rooted in ancestral farming cycles. Written in a highly accessible yet deeply academic style, the book bridges the gap between rural laborers and urban consumers, offering a gripping look at how what we plant ultimately defines who we become.
