Author Profile

Gareth Doherty is a visionary architect and urban theorist known for pioneering the synthesis of nature and technology in modern metropolitan development. His work explores the delicate balance between rapid urbanization in the Global South and the integration of smart, climateresilient infrastructures. His intellectual framework for Architecture and Urbanism in the 21st Century redefines the modern built environment across several interconnected pillars. He studied architecture at the AA, and undertook research on counter-reformation urban history at the Universities of Essex and Cambridge. He is a consultant on a number of international architectural and urban projects. His research and design projects have been published in many journals, including The Architectural Review, AAFiles, Arquitectura, Bauwelt, Casabella, Centre, Daidalos, and El Croquis.

About The Book

Architecture and Urbanism in the 21st Century explores the rapid evolution of the built environment. It highlights the shift toward sustainable, tech-integrated, and human-centric design, addressing unprecedented global urbanization and the urgent need for resilient cities that can adapt to changing societal and environmental challenges. Design philosophies are moving past the strict, function-based zoning of the past, favoring integrated, interdisciplinary approaches. The focus has transitioned from designing isolated aesthetic objects to creating dynamic, adaptive systems that continuously respond to their critical contexts. Eco-architecture, or sustainable design, prioritizes energy efficiency, renewable power integration, waste reduction, and the use of green materials. It treats cities and buildings as biophysical systems, seeking to harmonize the built environment with local ecosystems. Digital technology including IoT, ICT, and AI is revolutionizing how cities operate. This pillar of modern urbanism integrates physical and digital infrastructures to optimize resource management, enhance physical and social connectivity, and promote data-driven design solutions. Rapid demographic shifts and the rise of megacities present immense challenges and opportunities. The Global South has become a primary focal point for addressing informal settlements, rapid infrastructural expansion, and localized vernacular knowledge to create inclusive, equitable urban environments. Architecture serves as an expression of cultural identity and social values. Contemporary thought emphasizes designing spaces that reflect and empower local communities, integrating heritage conservation with contemporary progress while avoiding cultural homogenization. Modern urban design champions walkable, transit-oriented neighborhoods. By focusing on livability, these spaces are designed to encourage social interaction, equity, and health, transforming public spaces into inclusive hubs of community life. Faced with skyrocketing urban populations, vertical urbanism has become a necessary typology. However, modern approaches seek to humanize high-density living by incorporating mixed-use developments, communal green spaces, and masscustomization to avoid the repetitious monotony of 20th-century housing blocks. Transportation and transit networks form the backbone of modern cities. Contemporary infrastructure planning prioritizes integrated multi-modal transit systems-such as Metro and BRTS networks-that reduce emissions, increase accessibility, and promote active mobility like cycling and walking.
