Author Profile

Dr. Susan Hackwood is a distinguished pioneer in electrical engineering, a visionary academic administrator, and a formidable authority in advanced science and technology policy. Her career spans decades of groundbreaking work across industry, academia, and government leadership, making her professional pedigree uniquely aligned with the multifaceted demands of defining the foundational principles of nanoscience and nanotechnology. Dr. Hackwood's scientific journey began with a rigorous focus on the core chemical and physical behaviors of materials—the absolute bedrock of all nanoscale manipulation. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Combined Science with Honours followed by a Ph.D. in Solid State Ionics / Chemical Physics from DeMontfort University in the United Kingdom. Her foundational research was further shaped as a Mallory Battery Fellow and a visiting researcher at elite global institutions like the University of California, Berkeley, and the Chalmers Institute of Technology in Sweden. This deep grounding in solid-state systems provided her with an intimate understanding of how matter behaves at molecular boundaries, a prerequisite for any author tackling the physics and chemistry of the nanoscale. Before transitioning to academic leadership, Dr. Hackwood spent years at the legendary AT&T Bell Laboratories, the epicenter of 20th-century technological revolutions.Dr. Hackwood has consistently been at the forefront of creating the very institutional structures that house nanoscale and micro-scale research.

About The Book

The book Foundations for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology serves as a definitive masterwork that bridges the gap between classical physics, chemistry, and the quantum phenomena governing the nanoscale frontier. By systematically dismantling the boundaries of traditional disciplines, this comprehensive text provides researchers, students, and engineers with the foundational knowledge and advanced methodologies required to manipulate matter at the atomic level. It acts as an intellectual blueprint for navigating the complex universe of nanomaterials, offering a rigorous exploration of everything from fundamental theory to advanced atomic characterization and targeted architectural assembly. At its core, the text establishes that the nanoscale is not merely a continuation of the macroscopic world at a smaller scale, but an entirely different physical regime. The science behind nanotechnology is rooted in quantum mechanics, surface-to-volume ratio scaling, and confinement effects. When materials are reduced to nanometre dimensions, their electronic, optical, magnetic, and mechanical properties change drastically. This book meticulously details how wave-particle duality, quantum tunneling, and discrete energy levels replace the continuous bands of bulk materials, laying the theoretical and conceptual groundwork for every technological application that follows. It provides a comprehensive introduction to the fundamental principles underlying nanoscience and nanotechnology. It bridges the gap between introductory materials and advanced research, covering essential topics in physics, chemistry, and materials science as they apply to the nanoscale. The book is designed for students and researchers new to the field, offering clear explanations of quantum mechanics, surface science, synthesis methods, and characterization techniques essential for understanding and working with nanomaterials.
