Author Profile

Max Howard is a leading sociologist, cultural theorist, and the pioneering author behind the denitive academic text, Gender Sociology. Holding a PhD in Sociology from the University of Oxford, Dr. Howard has spent over two decades investigating the complex structures of gender identity, institutional bias, and societal expectations. His groundbreaking research focuses on how historical power dynamics shape modern gender roles, making him one of the most cited experts in contemporary cultural studies. In Gender Sociology, Dr. Howard delivers a masterful analysis of the invisible forces that govern human interaction. The book challenges traditional binaries, blending rigorous empirical research with compelling human narratives to explore how gender intersects with race, class, and technology in the 21st century. Universally praised by educators and activists alike, his work serves as an essential blueprint for understanding equality, dismantling systemic barriers, and fostering a more inclusive world.

About The Book

Gender Sociology offers a rigorous and comprehensive examination of how gender shapes, and is shaped by, historical, philosophical, and social structures. The text navigates the early protofeminist critiques hidden within Enlightenment philosophy and follows the structural demands of the Suffragist movements as they contested the boundaries of the public sphere. It then evaluates the existentialist rupture of Simone de Beauvoir, whose work fundamentally decoupled biology from destiny. The chapters map the radical shifts of the 20th century: the personalaspolitical awakening of SecondWave consciousnessraising, the structural critiques of MarxistFeminist syntheses regarding capitalism and domestic labor, and the foundational challenges posed by Radical Feminism to patriarchal authority. Finally, it explores the radical alternatives of Lesbian Separatism and concludes with the fracturing of grand metanarratives brought about by postmodern skepticism. The volume outlines the radical contingency thesis of social constructivism and balances it against a critical realist view of gendered systems as complex, emergent properties. The section concludes by confronting Western epistemic hegemony through decolonial stances and highlighting the necessity of transnational, coalitional frameworks for modern analysis. Designed for students, scholars, and critical thinkers, this text traces the evolution of gender theory from its foundational historical roots to the most pressing contemporary debates. By bridging classic structural analyses with cuttingedge postmodern and decolonial perspectives, the book provides readers with the analytical tools necessary to critique and deconstruct the gendered systems that organize human life.
