Author Profile

Derek Martian is a world-renowned agricultural economist and the Distinguished Professor of at the Horizon Institute of Economic Studies. Over a career spanning four decades, Dr. Martian has dedicated his research to decoding the complex financial and social structures that power global food systems. His pioneering work bridges the gap between traditional farming traditions and cutting-edge economic modeling. Dr. Martian's academic journey began in the rural heartlands, where he witnessed firsthand the volatile nature of crop markets and credit accessibility for smallholders. This early exposure inspired his lifelong pursuit to formalize the economic laws governing the earth's most vital industry. He has served as a chief economic advisor to the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and has led numerous global initiatives focused on agrarian reform, rural labor dynamics, and sustainable capital formation. In this definitive volume, Handbook of Agricultural Economics, Dr. Martian synthesizes his lifetime of field research and academic lectures into a masterclass for students, policymakers, and researchers. The treatise opens with the foundational principles and historical evolution of agricultural thought, tracing how primitive barter systems transformed into global commodities trading. Dr. Martian then guides the reader through the analytical mechanics of production theory and practical farm management, offering actionable strategies for optimizing resource allocation. The core of the book tackles the structural pillars of rural economies, providing deep insights into land tenure, labor market vulnerabilities, and the critical role of institutional finance. Finally, Dr. Martian demystifies the volatile forces of agricultural marketing and price policy. He delivers a masterly analysis of supply, demand, and market equilibrium in an era of rapid climate and geopolitical shifts. Dr. Martian lives in Vermont, where he continues to write and consult on global food security.
