Author Profile

Dr. Alistair Mark, PhD, FAICP is a world-renowned urban theorist and practitioner with four decades of experience reshaping global metropolitan landscapes. He currently serves as the Distinguished Chair of Urban Regeneration at the Horizon Institute of Technology. Before entering academia, Dr. Mark spent fifteen years as the Chief Urban Strategist for the European Eco-District Initiative. There, he pioneered the "10-Minute Neighborhood" framework now utilized across thirty international cities. His practical consulting work spans six continents. He has advised municipal governments from Tokyo to Medellín on climate-resilient zoning, public transit integration, and equitable housing policies. Dr. Mark holds a Master's in City Planning from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and a PhD in Urban Sociology from Oxford University. He is a frequent keynote speaker at the World Urban Forum and lives in a carbon-neutral townhouse in Copenhagen.

About The Book

The Handbook of City and Town Planning serves as an exhaustive, comprehensive guide to the art and science of urban development. It integrates foundational theory with practical implementation, providing architects, policymakers, and civic leaders with the tools needed to design sustainable, functional, and community-centric settlements. This book establishes the basic objectives of town planning (health, convenience, and beauty) and traces urban design from early historical civilizations (such as the Harappan grid-networks) to the modern era. Explores foundational paradigms like the Garden City movement and covers core land use principles (designing for open spaces, greenbelts, and efficient neighborhood units). Details the systematic development of Master and Development plans. Highlights how to design the "public realm" to create accessible, vibrant outdoor and civic spaces. Breaks down how to separate incompatible land uses through zoning, enforce building bylaws, and utilize legal frameworks to manage spatial development. Focuses on formulating inclusive housing policies and establishing aesthetic, morphological, and functional urban design guidelines. Covers the basics of transport networks (transit-oriented development, roads, and traffic management) and the provision of foundational municipal infrastructure (utilities, water, and waste). Highlights strategies for eco-friendly urban development (climate resilience, green tech) and economic revitalization. Details how Geospatial Information Systems (GIS) are used to map, analyze, and model city growth, coupled with frameworks to ensure active community participation in decision-making. This book shows how planners are developing new strategies to create more adaptable and environmentally responsible urban forms. It examines case studies of different cities and their approaches to common problems, offering lessons from around the world. By compiling this range of knowledge, the Handbook of City and Town Planning serves as a vital tool for students, practitioners, and policymakers. It provides a solid grounding in the principles and practices that guide the creation of better places for people to live, work, and interact.
