Author Profile

Nathan King is a world-renowned art historian, cultural archivist, and leading authority on Renaissance Europe. He holds a PhD in Art History and Visual Culture from the University of Oxford, where his pioneering research on the socio-political networks of 16th-century Italian workshops earned the prestigious European History Laureate. Before dedicating his life to literature and academia, King spent over a decade as a senior curator of European Painting and Sculpture at the Musei Vaticani and collaborated frequently with the Gallerie degli Uffizi in Florence. His unprecedented access to private Medici family correspondences and restricted monastic libraries allowed him to uncover the hidden political geometries and esoteric philosophies that fueled the cultural explosion of the 1500s. King has served as a guest lecturer at Harvard University, the Sorbonne, and the Courtauld Institute of Art. He is also a regular consultant for international art restoration projects, helping to physically preserve the masterpieces he writes about. His deep familiarity with the tangible remnants of the era from the brushstroke physics of Leonardo da Vinci to the architectural engineering of Michelangelo lends his writing an unparalleled vividness and authority. In High Renaissance, King seamlessly blends meticulous archival scholarship with the gripping narrative pace of a political thriller. He breathes life into the fierce rivalries, radical innovations, and absolute geniuses who dragged humanity out of the dark and redefined the boundaries of human expression forever.

About The Book

In art history, the High Renaissance was a short period of the most exceptional artistic production in the Italian states, particularly Rome, capital of the Papal States, and in Florence, during the Italian Renaissance. Most art historians state that the High Renaissance started between 1490 and 1500, and ended in 1520 with the death of Raphael, although some say the High Renaissance ended about 1525, or in 1527 with the Sack of Rome by the mutinous army of Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor, or about 1530. The best-known exponents of painting, sculpture, and architecture of the High Renaissance include Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Raphael, and Bramante. In the 21st century, the use of the term has been frequently criticized by some academic art historians for oversimplifying artistic developments, ignoring historical context, and focusing only on a few iconic works.[1] The perception that the early sixteenth century saw a culmination of the Renaissance classical revival - only to degrade into mannerism shortly after Raphael's death in 1520 has been extremely tenacious; but many scholars agree that this tidy narrative is deeply problematic. Exploring how we can reconceptualize the High Renaissance in a way that reflects how we research and teach today, this volume complicates and deepens our understanding of artistic change. Focusing on Rome, the paradigmatic centre of the High Renaissance narrative, each chapter presents a particular aspect of the culture of the city in the early sixteenth century, including new analyses of Raphael's stanze, Michelangelo's Sistine Ceiling and the architectural designs of Bramante.
