Author Profile

Ian Ward has established a distinct presence in industrial sociology through his concentrated work on the social consequences of de-industrialization. His research centres on how the decline of traditional manufacturing sectors reshapes community life and individual identity, particularly among working-class populations. This focus reflects a broader sociological concern with the interplay between economic structures and personal experience, moving beyond theoretical models to examine lived realities in post-industrial settings. Ward's specific contribution lies in his detailed examination of working-class masculinity within communities affected by industrial change. His studies show how gender norms and class identities are forged through historical ties to industrial labour, and how these cultural codes persist even as employment patterns shift dramatically. By documenting the challenges faced by young men in de-industrialized areas, he illustrates the persistence of traditional expectations around work and manhood, offering a grounded perspective on the human costs of economic transition and the complex social dynamics that follow the loss of industrial jobs.

About The Book

The book offers a systematic examination of how industrial production shapes social life, beginning with the historical shift from agrarian economies to factory-based systems. It traces the evolution of work organization, from early craft production to modern assembly lines and digital platforms, showing how each phase redefined human relationships within the workplace. The book pays close attention to the division of labor, managerial authority, and the daily experiences of workers across different industries and national contexts. The latter sections of the book tackle contemporary challenges, including automation, global supply chains, and the rise of nonstandard employment arrangements. It discusses how technological innovations disrupt traditional job categories while creating new occupational niches, and it explores the social tensions that accompany these transitions. Issues of inequality receive detailed treatment, with chapters on wage gaps, occupational segregation by gender and race, and the uneven distribution of workplace power. The book concludes with an assessment of worker responses, covering union strategies, legal reforms, and grassroots organizing efforts that seek to improve conditions within an evolving economic order.
