About The Book

Islamic Thought and the Reform Movement in the Modern World serves as a profound intellectual exploration of how Muslim societies have grappled with modernity, colonial upheaval, and the urgent necessity for internal renewal. The central narrative of this study examines the crossroads where classical heritage encounters the rapid march of the modern era. For centuries, legalistic and traditional interpretations held a dominant grip on religious thought. However, the 19th and 20th centuries brought immense geopolitical shifts, technological acceleration, and Western hegemony. Rather than choosing between total westernization and rigid isolation, reformist intellectuals argued for an intellectual revival rooted in ijtihad (independent reasoning). Key Pillars of the Reform Movement include Reinterpretation of Sources: Reformers sought to separate the eternal spiritual core of Islam from temporary, culturally bound medieval jurisprudence; Harmony with Science: Thinkers like Sir Sayyid Ahmad Khan and Allama Muhammad Iqbal emphasized that rational inquiry and modern science do not contradict true religious faith, but rather validate the Quranic call to observe the universe; Redefining Authority: The movement challenges the monopoly of stagnant traditional authorities, opening the door for dynamic internal criticism and broader community participation; Social and Political Justice: Discussions pivot heavily toward human rights, pluralism, gender equality, and the ethical responsibilities of governance in contemporary Muslim societies.
