About The Book

Journalism, Crisis, and Democracy is a recurring thematic focus across contemporary media studies. This book posits that the collapse of commercial news models and the rise of the misinformation society threaten democratic selfgovernance, necessitating a transition to public media systems. Traditionally, democratic theory requires the press to hold power accountable. When newsrooms are underfunded or beholden to corporate interests, this watchdog function collapses. Media scholars trace the decline to an overreliance on ad revenue. As digital platforms siphon off this funding, local news ecosystems are decimated, leaving "news deserts". Social media algorithms prioritize engagement over accuracy, accelerating polarization and the spread of misinformation. Experts argue for robust public policy interventions, such as direct government subsidies for independent journalism, establishing publicly funded media, or taxing major tech companies to support local. This text identifies the press as a critical institution responsible for providing citizens with the facts needed to participate meaningfully in selfgovernance. It traces how the evolution of newspapers and mass communication historically laid the groundwork for modern democratic engagement; Highlights the Fourth Estate concept, where the media exercises influence to check state power, prevent abuses, and expose corruption. This book analyses how accessible, verified news empowers voters and fosters active civic involvement. Discusses the necessity of reflecting a diverse range of voices and perspectives to ensure adequate political representation. Examines constitutional and human rights frameworks that protect journalists from censorship and state interference. Investigates the media's function as a shared, democratic space where public opinion is formed and explores the factors including partisan polarization and the rise of misinformation that contribute to dwindling public confidence in institutional media. Details how the hollowing out of news organizations has reduced vital indepth and investigative reporting.
