Author Profile

Dr. Christina Richardson is a leading voice in contemporary communication ethics. With over two decades of experience traversing the intersections of journalism, cultural sociology, and digital media, her scholarship bridges the gap between abstract philosophical frameworks and the visceral, realworld dilemmas faced by modern media practitioners. Dr. Richardson earned her Ph.D. in Mass Communication at the University of Chicago. Her applied approach to moral reasoning has led to worldwide collaborations, ranging from evaluating the ethical implications of emerging AI in newsrooms to consulting for public relations boards in South Africa. Throughout her career, Dr. Christna has focused on demystifying how media professionals make difficult moral choices. She advocates for an analytical approach to mass communication, insisting that theoretical principles such as Aristotle's golden mean, Kant's categorical imperative, and Rawls' veil of ignorance, must be practically applicable to the challenges of the digital age. Dr. Richardson's passion lies in cultivating ethical awareness. She believes that the best ethical decisions are those that are viable, reasonable, fair, and honorable in the public sphere. Through her clear, structured, and casestudydriven approach, she empowers students and professionals alike to develop a robust moral compass to navigate an increasingly complex information landscape.

About The Book

Media Ethics: Cases and Moral Reasoning is designed as a foundational mass communication book. It challenges students and professionals to build analytical skills through theoretical philosophies and the "Potter Box" framework, exploring reallife ethical dilemmas in journalism, advertising, public relations, and entertainment. The foundation for evaluating modern mass communication begins with understanding core societal expectations and human agency. This text provides a comprehensive overview of how professional standards, social responsibility, and basic ethical philosophies are shaped. Introduces why ethical awareness is critical in an era of rapid information sharing and global connectivity. Discusses the media's obligation to provide a truthful, comprehensive, and intelligent account of the day's events in a context that gives them meaning. Explores classical frameworks such as Aristotle's Golden Mean, Kant's Categorical Imperative, and Utilitarianism and how practitioners weigh them against commercial and corporate pressures. Building on these philosophical foundations it introduces actionable decisionmaking models to solve ethical dilemmas. It helps practitioners avoid kneejerk reactions by outlining a structured, analytical path to moral problemsolving. The book takes center stage, utilizing four critical dimensions of moral analysis: Definitions (understanding the facts), Values (identifying professional or personal standards), Principles (applying ethical philosophies), and Loyalties (determining who the practitioner owes allegiance to). The text translates theory into practice, focusing on realworld scenarios across media fields.
