Author Profile

Dylan Green is an acclaimed medievalist, author, and lecturer dedicated to making the vibrant world of the Middle Ages accessible to modern readers. He holds a Ph.D. in Medieval Studies from the University of Oxford, where his doctoral research focused on the evolution of Arthurian romance and vernacular poetry in fourteenth-century Britain. Prior to his graduate studies, he graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature and History from the University of Edinburgh. For over a decade, Dr. Green has taught courses on early European literature, Old English, and Chaucerian texts. His unique teaching philosophy bridges the gap between rigorous academic scholarship and popular storytelling, a talent that earned him the prestigious Excellence in Teaching Award in 2022. He has spent years translating dusty archival manuscripts into engaging narratives, firmly believing that the themes of medieval literature honor, love, betrayal, and human resilience—are just as relevant today as they were centuries ago. When he is not in the classroom or examining ancient codices, Dylan is a frequent contributor to historical documentaries and literary podcasts. He lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where he maintains an extensive collection of rare books and spends his weekends learning to play the lute. Medieval Literature Basics is the culmination of his life’s passion: a definitive, welcoming guide designed to introduce a new generation of readers to the rich tapestry of the medieval mind.

About The Book

Medieval Literature Basics acts as a powerful bridge connecting the distant, mist-shrouded world of the Middle Ages with the contemporary reader. At its core, the book dismantles the common misconception that the medieval period was a static, "dark" era of intellectual stagnation. Instead, it unveils a dynamic millennium where literature was an active, explosive battleground of ideas concerning faith, identity, political power, and radical experimentation. The volume meticulously unpacks the unique mechanics of medieval storytelling. It spans across the martial weight of epics like Beowulf, the complex psychological landscapes of courtly love, and the surreal, allegorical depths of dream visions. Literature in the Middle Ages was never passive entertainment. The book explores how texts directly engaged with dominant structures: the absolute hegemony of the Church, the bloody realities of feudal politics, and the rigid yet fracturing structures of social class. The narrative tracks a massive evolutionary shift—how literature adapted as it transitioned from an oral culture rooted in performance to hand-copied parchment manuscripts, and finally to the revolutionary dawn of the printing press. It highlights the historic shift where writers increasingly abandoned scholarly Latin in favour of the vernacular (the languages of everyday people), paving the way for giants like Geoffrey Chaucer and Dante Alighieri to redefine national identity. What makes Medieval Literature Basics incredibly powerful is its profound ability to humanize history. Instead of viewing these ancient texts as fossilized artifacts, Weisl and Cunder demonstrate that the anxieties driving medieval authors are identical to our own.
