Author Profile

Thomas Wilson is a distinguished computer scientist, researcher, and educator with over two decades of experience at the forefront of wireless communications and mobile architecture. Known for his ability to bridge complex theoretical frameworks with practical, real-world applications, Wilson has dedicated his career to advancing how the world connects, computes, and communicates in a decentralized digital landscape. His extensive background spans both cutting-edge academic research and hands-on industrial innovation. He has served as a senior consultant for leading telecommunications firms and global technology conglomerates, guiding the development of next-generation cellular networks and distributed cloud systems. As a professor and frequent keynote speaker at international computing conferences, he has mentored a generation of engineers, earning accolades for his lucid teaching methodology and forward-thinking curriculum design. For his seminal book, Mobile Computing, Wilson brings a masterclass combination of academic rigor and industry intuition. He holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science with a specialized focus on Wireless Sensor Networks and Mobile Distributed Systems from a premier technological institution. Author of over fifty peer-reviewed papers published in IEEE and ACM journals, covering critical topics such as energy-efficient routing protocols, mobile edge computing (MEC), and vehicular ad-hoc networks (VANETs). In Mobile Computing, Thomas Wilson synthesizes this lifetime of expertise into a powerful, comprehensive blueprint. He moves beyond transient software trends to explore the permanent, foundational mechanics of the field—ranging from radio frequency principles and mobile IP routing to modern challenges in mobile cloud integration, cellular evolution, and Internet of Things (IoT) security.

About The Book

Mobile computing is human–computer interaction in which a computer is expected to be transported during normal usage and allow for transmission of data, which can include voice and video transmissions. Mobile computing involves mobile communication, mobile hardware, and mobile software. Communication issues include ad hoc networks and infrastructure networks as well as communication properties, protocols, data formats, and concrete technologies. Hardware includes mobile devices or device components. Mobile software deals with the characteristics and requirements of mobile applications. Mobile Computing is the definitive blueprints for understanding the invisible architecture connecting the modern global village. This comprehensive text explores how software, networks, and distributed databases adapt dynamically to the shifting, volatile environments of users in motion. This book is a critical masterclass for undergraduate students, enterprise software architects, and visionary engineers alike. It provides the exact intellectual scaffolding required to transform raw wireless signals into secure, scalable, and high-performance mobile application ecosystems. The true genius of this text lies in how it systematically untangles the staggering complexity of mobile architecture. It charts the evolutionary trajectory of human communication from early 1G to 3G/4G cellular networks, through to the integration of modern wireless broadband like Wi-Fi and WiMax. It shifts the reader's perspective from stationary, desktop-centric thinking to an aggressive, resource-constrained paradigm where power, bandwidth, and connectivity are in constant flux. Mobile computing represents a fundamental re-architecture of our technological world. It is the convergence of miniaturized hardware, pervasive wireless networks, and intelligent, cloud-connected software into a paradigm of continuous, context aware assistance. It has moved computing from a specific place we go to a constant, ambient presence in our lives.
