Author Profile

Connor Fitzgerald is a distinguished evolutionary biologist, field zoologist, and educator whose life’s work has been dedicated to decoding the structural mysteries of the animal kingdom. A leading voice in modern comparative anatomy, Dr. Fitzgerald’s career spans over three decades of groundbreaking fieldwork, academic research, and classroom teaching, making him uniquely qualified to author Practical Zoology: Vertebrates. Dr. Fitzgerald earned his Bachelor of Science in Zoology from the University of Edinburgh, where he graduated with first-class honors. Driven by a deep fascination with chordate evolution, he later completed his Ph.D. in Evolutionary Morphology at Cambridge University. His doctoral dissertation on the transitional skeletal mechanics of early tetrapods received the prestigious Thomas Huxley Prize for outstanding contributions to vertebrate paleontology and anatomy. Following his postgraduate studies, Dr. Fitzgerald accepted a research fellowship at the Smithsonian Institution, where he meticulously mapped the soft-tissue anatomy of elusive marine vertebrates. His insatiable curiosity subsequently led him into the field, directing over two dozen international expeditions across the dense rainforests of the Amazon Basin, the remote archipelagos of Southeast Asia, and the sub-zero ecosystems of the Antarctic Peninsula. Through these journeys, he successfully identified four previously uncataloged species of amphibia and reptilia, expanding the scientific community's understanding of vertebrate adaptation in extreme environments. Currently holding the chair of Professor Emeritus of Vertebrate Biology at the Pacific Institute of Sciences, Dr. Fitzgerald has spent thirty years in the laboratory guiding thousands of undergraduate and postgraduate students

About The Book

Practical Zoology: Vertebrates is not merely a textbook; it is the ultimate architectural blueprint of the chordate world. From the subtle intricacies of microtomy to the grand design of comparative osteology, this book acts as a bridge between abstract evolutionary theory and the raw reality of the dissection table. At its core, the book demands that students do not just look at life, but understand how it is constructed. It systematically deconstructs the Phylum Chordata, mapping out the transition from primitive jawless organisms to the complex physiological marvels of mammals. By organizing internal anatomy into highly logical, comparative systems, it unveils the master plan of nature: showing how a single gill arch evolves over millions of years to form the intricate jawlines and auditory bones of higher vertebrates. What elevates "Practical Zoology: Vertebrates" from a simple lab manual to a powerful scientific companion is its vast, cross-disciplinary scope. It refuses to limit the student to simple observation In the laboratory, clarity is the difference between a ruined specimen and a breakthrough. The book is legendary for its stippled, high-contrast anatomical diagrams. These illustrations strip away the visual noise of a dissection, highlighting exactly where an artery branches, how a nerve plexus routes, or where a muscle attaches. It trains the student’s eye to see the invisible, making it an indispensable tool for aceing viva-voce examinations and practical lab finals. Beyond the charts and protocols, the true power of "Practical Zoology: Vertebrates" lies in the scientific mindset it forces you to adopt. Whether you are preparing a permanent stained slide under a microscope or tracing the systemic arches of a vertebrate circulatory system, this book is the definitive authority that ensures your hands can execute what your mind understands.
