In Qualitative Research Methods in Human Geography, Dr. Green distills his decades of classroom passion and field grit into a definitive, transformative blueprint for the next generation of spatial researchers. Green has authored over 50 peer-reviewed articles and served as the principal investigator on major international studies funded by the Global Environment Facility and the Social Sciences Research Council. Renowned for his innovative blending of traditional ethnography with digital geospatial storytelling, he has dedicated his career to amplifying marginalized voices and teaching the next generation of researchers how to listen to the landscape.

About The Book

Qualitative Research Methods in Human Geography is a definitive, rigorous, and deeply illuminating exploration of the diverse qualitative pathways used to understand the complex interactions between people, places, and environments. Positioned at the intersection of critical spatial theory and empirical social science, this book serves as both an authoritative anchor for seasoned scholars and an accessible, empowering guide for emerging researchers navigating the nuances of human geography. At its core, the text shifts the geographical lens from abstract coordinates and quantitative grids to the lived, felt, and contested realities of everyday spaces. It challenges readers to think critically about how power, identity, culture, and history manifest in specific landscapes. Rather than viewing space as a passive backdrop, the authors position it as an active agent in shaping human relationships and conversely, look at how human practices constantly remake space. The book provides a meticulously structured overview of the qualitative research process, guiding readers seamlessly from philosophical underpinnings to practical field execution and data analysis. It covers foundational techniques while keeping pace with the rapidly evolving digital and visual landscapes of contemporary geography. In-depth guidance on conducting semi-structured interviews, oral histories, focus groups, and participant observation to capture rich, narrative-driven data. Strategies for analyzing visual media, maps, landscapes, material culture, and the built environment. Methodologies adapted for the modern era, exploring how online communities, digital geolocations, and virtual spaces redefine geographical boundaries.
