About The Book

Reducing Urban Poverty is a comprehensive book that examines the causes, consequences, and solutions associated with poverty in rapidly growing urban areas. The book explores how urbanization, economic inequality, unemployment, inadequate housing, limited access to education and healthcare, and social exclusion contribute to persistent poverty in cities around the world. It emphasizes that urban poverty is a multidimensional challenge requiring integrated policies that address not only income deprivation but also access to essential services, employment opportunities, social protection, and sustainable urban development. The book draws upon perspectives from economics, sociology, urban planning, public policy, and development studies to provide a holistic understanding of poverty in urban environments. It discusses the impact of migration, informal settlements, infrastructure deficiencies, environmental degradation, and unequal distribution of resources on the quality of life of urban populations. The role of governments, local authorities, civil society organizations, and the private sector is examined in designing and implementing effective poverty reduction strategies. Special attention is given to inclusive economic growth, affordable housing, skill development, financial inclusion, community participation, and employment generation as essential components of sustainable urban development. The book highlights the importance of technological innovation, digital inclusion, climate resilience, and data-driven governance in improving service delivery and expanding opportunities for disadvantaged communities.
