Author Profile

Jonathan Collins, PhD, is a distinguished geographer, spatial analyst, and academic leader with over two decades of experience pioneering research in spatial data infrastructures and humanenvironment interactions. Driven by a passion for understanding the dynamic relationships that shape our physical and cultural landscapes, he has dedicated his career to refining the empirical and theoretical frameworks that underpin modern geographic inquiry. Dr. Collins earned his Doctorate in Geography from the University of Cambridge, where his groundbreaking dissertation on urban spatial dynamics received the prestigious Royal Geographical Society Research Excellence Award. He currently serves as a Professor of Geographic Science and Spatial Methods at the Earth and Environmental Sciences Institute, where he chairs the Advanced Research Committee. Throughout his career, Dr. Collins has directed numerous high-impact, multi-disciplinary research projects funded by global environmental agencies. He has published over fifty peer-reviewed articles in leading international journals, including Annals of the American Association of Geographers and The Professional Geographer. His fieldwork has taken him from the rapidly urbanising corridors of Southeast Asia to the fragile ecosystems of the Andean highlands, equipping him with a profound, practical understanding of the challenges researchers face on the ground.

About The Book

Research Methodology in Geography serves as the definitive architectural blueprint for transforming raw spatial observations into rigorous, impactful geographical knowledge. Far from being a mere compilation of analytical tools, it acts as a philosophical and practical compass for any researcher seeking to navigate the complex, dynamic intersections of space, place, human societies, and the natural environment. At its core, this book bridges the profound philosophical shifts in geographical thought with concrete research applications. It guides the reader through the evolution of spatial thinking from quantitative spatial science and positivism to qualitative, humanistic, critical, and post-structural geographies. By grounding methodology in ontology and epistemology, the text ensures that every map drawn, every statistic computed, and every interview conducted is backed by deep theoretical intent. It challenges researchers to not only ask where phenomena occur, but why they matter, and whose perspectives are being represented. This book masterfully synthesizes diverse methodologies into a cohesive framework. Demystifies spatial statistics, sampling techniques, and hypothesis testing, empowering researchers to uncover patterns, densities, and spatial correlations with mathematical precision. Provides rigorous protocols for ethnography, archival research, semi-structured interviews, and discourse analysis, capturing the lived experiences, sense of place, and power dynamics that shape human landscapes. Integrates cutting-edge applications of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Remote Sensing (RS), and Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS), showing how to turn big spatial data into actionable visual narratives. Whether you are an undergraduate student designing your first field study, a postgraduate student structuring a dissertation, or a seasoned professional tackling complex spatial problem, this book provides the intellectual rigor and practical expertise required to produce geography that matters.
