Author Profile

Paul Baker is a distinguished geospatial scientist, author, and pioneer in the fields of environmental modeling and spatial data analysis. He holds a Ph.D. in Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) from the University of Oxford, where his groundbreaking research focused on multi-scale environmental dynamics and satellite image processing. With over two decades of experience bridging academic rigor and real-world application, Dr. Baker has served as a senior consultant for global environmental agencies and aerospace organizations, leading initiatives that utilize satellite data to track climate displacement and ecological degradation. In Scale in Remote Sensing and GIS, Dr. Baker distills his extensive expertise into a definitive guide on how spatial scale dictates our understanding of the planet. His work confronts one of the most critical challenges in modern geography: how patterns change when observed from a drone, an airplane, or a satellite. Known for his ability to translate dense mathematical concepts into elegant, actionable insights, Dr. Baker provides researchers and practitioners with the theoretical foundation and practical tools needed to navigate the complexities of resolution, extent, and data aggregation. He currently lives in Colorado, where he continues to research predictive planetary modeling and mentor the next generation of geospatial innovators.

About The Book

Scale is not merely a zoom level or a fraction on a map legend; it is the fundamental lens through which we perceive, measure, and model planetary reality. When transitioning from analog maps to digital pixels and satellite orbits, traditional definitions break down. What happens when a pixel changes from representing a square meter to a square kilometer? The patterns change, the processes shift, and conclusions can entirely warp. The book masterfully blends rigorous spatial theory with concrete, real-world examples across multiple temporal and spatial dimensions. It deconstructs how spatial resolution (pixel size) and spatial extent (total area covered) interact, dictating the limits of what our models can actually prove. It tackles complex cross-scale inferences, helping scientists avoid traps like the Modidfiable Areal Unit Problem (MAUP) and ecological fallacies. This book describes the grid cells, the pixels, that capture the world. At a 30- centimeter scale, the book reveals individual cars on a highway. At a 1-kilometer scale, those cars vanish, replaced by the average temperature of a burning city. It warns that looking too closely blinds you to the pattern, while looking too far away erases the individual. This text remains an indispensable compass for anyone daring to interpret the Earth from above, serving as a powerful reminder that in geospatial science, scale is everything. The concept of scale in Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is the bridge between human perception and the actual behavior of the Earth. It determines whether we see a single leaf, a forest canopy, or a global climate system, dictating how we observe, analyze, and manage our planet. The true power of Remote Sensing and GIS does not lie in finding the highest resolution, but in the fluid ability to upscale and downscale to see the universe in a grain of sand, and the grain of sand within the universe.
