Author Profile

Dr. Stewart Rex is a premier urban sociologist and human geographer whose work redefines global South urbanism. He holds a Ph.D. from the London School of Economics, where his research focused on informal economies. Currently, he serves as the Chair of Development Studies at the Institute of Urban Ecologies. Dr. Stewart spent over a decade conducting immersive ethnographic fieldwork across megacities like Lagos, and Rio de Janeiro. His pioneering concept of "subaltern resourcefulness" shifts the academic lens away from urban deficit toward community-led resilience. He has served as a senior policy advisor to UN-Habitat on informal settlement regularization. He previous award-winning publication, Margins as Hubs, established her as a vital voice in contemporary postcolonial geography.

About The Book

Slumdog Cities: Rethinking Subaltern Urbanism is written as a foundational text in urban studies that reframes megacities in the Global South. It challenges apocalyptic narratives of slums, arguing they are spaces of intense agency, resilience, and complex political economy rather than just zones of deprivation. Traditional urban theory is often Eurocentric, measuring the cities of the Majority World against idealized models of Western urbanization. Subaltern urbanism disrupts this by centering the global South. It recognizes slums not as aberrations to be eradicated, but as vital, permanent fixtures of contemporary urban life. Slums are not spontaneous accidents; they are the products of specific historical and colonial trajectories. Rapid industrialization, uneven rural-to-urban migration, and the systemic neglect of the working class by post-colonial governments have historically driven the formation of these marginalized enclaves. Informality is not the absence of law, but rather a complex system of rules that governs urban space. This involves the creation of "gray spaces" that exist in a state of legality or illegality. Maps of these cities highlight how spatial boundaries are constantly negotiated, blurring the lines between formal city planning and informal settlements. These cities are tied to global capitalism. Subaltern urban spaces function as massive reservoirs of cheap labor that sustain the formal economy. The political economy here is characterized by the commodification of poverty, where land grabbing, informal real estate markets, and evictions are often driven by state-led development and corporate interests. Beneath the physical poverty lies a vibrant social fabric. Community dynamics are shaped by mutual aid, cultural resilience, and survival strategies. These networks build social capital and collective solidarity, allowing marginalized residents to carve out a dignified existence despite systemic oppression. Access to basic necessities such as running water, sanitation, and electricity is heavily politicized. The everyday lives of slum dwellers revolve around navigating infrastructure deficits. Residents frequently rely on informal networks, localized syndicates, or political patronage to access essential urban services. Informal settlements are disproportionately vulnerable to environmental hazards like flooding, extreme heat, and pollution. Despite this, communities display incredible resilience by developing localized adaptation strategies, grassroots disaster response, and autonomous resource management systems to survive in high-risk zones.
