Author Profile

Eric Robinson is a distinguished scholar, historian, and academic whose extensive research lies at the intersection of classical historiography, Islamic civilizational studies, and the evolution of social science methodologies. With over two decades of rigorous academic inquiry, Robinson has established himself as a critical voice in deconstructing how historical narratives are formed, preserved, and interpreted within the Islamic world. His latest monumental work, Social Sciences and Methodology of Muslim Historiography, represents the culmination of years of archival research and a profound dedication to bridging Western analytical frameworks with traditional Islamic historical traditions. Robinson’s authoritative approach to the subject matter is backed by an exemplary academic pedigree: Ph.D. in Islamic History and Historiography from a premier institution for Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies, where his doctoral thesis focused on the structural methodologies of early Islamic annalists. Master of Arts in Historical Research Methods, providing him with a sharp, interdisciplinary edge in applying modern sociological and anthropological frameworks to ancient and medieval texts. Proficiency in Classical Arabic, Persian, and Ottoman Turkish, allowing him unmediated, direct access to primary manuscripts, biographical dictionaries (tabaqat), and foundational chronicles without relying on secondary translations. Throughout his career, Eric Robinson has challenged the Eurocentric biases that frequently dominate mainstream social sciences. His research philosophy is rooted in the belief that Muslim historiography is not merely a passive recording of events, but a sophisticated, deeply analytical science with its own rigorous systems of validation—such as the development of Isnad (chains of transmission) and Jarh wa-Ta'dil (biographical evaluation).

About The Book

Social Sciences and Methodology of Muslim Historiography is a seminal, intellectually rigorous exploration that bridges the gap between classical Islamic historical traditions and modern social science methodologies. This comprehensive volume re-examines how Muslim historians historically recorded, interpreted, and analyzed the human experience, while offering a critical framework for contemporary scholars seeking to understand the evolution of historical writing within the Islamic world. At its core, this book serves as both a historical survey and a methodological manifesto. It addresses a critical gap in academic literature: the tendency of mainstream historiography to overlook or oversimplify the deeply analytical and sociological dimensions of classical Islamic historical writing. Far from being mere chroniclers of dynastic successions or religious lineages, classical Muslim historians developed highly sophisticated systems of source criticism, social analysis, and causal explanation. This work systematically deconstructs those methodologies, tracing their evolution from the early Hadith critical sciences to the groundbreaking sociological frameworks of late medieval scholars. By placing these traditional methodologies in conversation with modern disciplines like sociology, anthropology, and political science, the book demonstrates the enduring relevance of Muslim historiography to global intellectual history. In an era where the humanities are increasingly interdisciplinary, "Social Sciences and Methodology of Muslim Historiography" stands out as a vital intellectual bridge. It proves that the classical Muslim intellectual tradition was inherently dynamic, analytical, and deeply concerned with the empirical realities of human societies.
