Author Profile

Scott Barnes, PhD, is a worldrenowned sociologist, media theorist, and the Chair of the Department of Media and Society at the Institute for Advanced Social Research. He earned his Doctorate in Sociology and Communication from the University of Cambridge, where his ground breaking research on digital hegemony and state surveillance won the prestigious Global Media Scholar Award. Over a career spanning two decades, Dr. Barnes has established herself as a leading voice on the intersection of institutional power and human agency. His ethnographic studies on newsroom gatekeeping and algorithmic bias have reshaped how modern institutions understand information flow. A frequent keynote speaker at global summits and a regular consultant for international human rights organizations, her work bridges the gap between critical theory and realworld media reform. In Sociology of Mass Communication, Dr. Barnes delivers her magnum opus a comprehensive, masterfully structured exploration of the media landscapes shaping our global consciousness.

About The Book

This book offers a comprehensive, critically engaged, and cuttingedge exploration of how media shapes and is shaped by our social world. Instead of treating media simply as a tool for information delivery, this text treats communication as a dynamic site of social struggle. It bridges classical sociological theory with contemporary digital realities, equipping readers with the analytical tools needed to critique the algorithmic and networked societies of today. This book offers a definitive, critically engaged exploration of the Sociology of Mass Communication, tracing how media systems both shape and are shaped by human society. Through a blend of classical sociological theories and contemporary empirical research, this book examines how mass communication functions as a foundational social institution, a mechanism of social control, and a powerful site for identity formation and resistance. Designed for advanced students, researchers, and media practitioners, this comprehensive volume unpacks the complex interplay between media, power, and human agency in an increasingly connected world. Designed specifically for students, scholars, and researchers, it provides a powerful framework for understanding the intricate relationship between communication architectures, power dynamics, and human agency in the 21st century.
