Author Profile

Marcus Vance is an awardwinning media strategist, investigative journalist, and the author of Solutions to Journalism. With over 15 years of experience in global newsrooms, he has dedicated his career to combating misinformation and pioneering constructive, community focused reporting models worldwide. Beyond the newsroom, he is a soughtafter thought leader and the founder of the Global Media Ethics Initiative, where he consults with major publications to rebuild public trust. His ground breaking work has earned her numerous accolades, including the International Press Association Award for Excellence in Reporting. Vance spent 15 years as a frontline investigative reporter covering environmental crises and systemic poverty. Over time, he noticed that constantly reporting on devastation caused "news fatigue" and made audiences look away. Seeking a better path forward, he shifted his focus from merely uncovering corruption to executing deep, evidencebased investigations into successful community interventions. This transition inspired him to write the definitive book, Solutions to Journalism.

About The Book

Solutions journalism is a rigorous reporting approach that investigates both the problems in society and the evidencebased responses to them. Rather than focusing solely on "what is wrong," it critically examines how communities, organizations, and leaders are effectively tackling those issues. Solutions to Journalism is a comprehensive, practical handbook that redefines modern reporting by emphasizing rigorous, evidencebased storytelling about responses to societal problems. It equips media professionals to build civic trust and drive community engagement through actionable techniques. The book defines the core principles of solutions reporting, distinguishing it from "hero worship" or unverified feelgood stories. It explores how journalists can act as catalysts for change by covering what is working to solve societal crises, rather than only reporting on failures. Practical guidance on spotting story angles that focus on systemic responses, successful prototypes, and structural interventions. Focuses on interviewing data, verifying the effectiveness of programs, and measuring qualitative and quantitative results. Details how to structure narratives like puzzles or mysteries, utilizing limitations, context, and replicability to keep audiences informed and engaged. Highlights the importance of empirical rigor to avoid falling into opinionbased advocacy while fairly addressing a program's shortcomings. Examines how solutionoriented reporting helps depolarize public discourse, increase civic participation, and reduce news avoidance. Features realworld case studies demonstrating how newsrooms successfully transition to solutionsfocused coverage. Explores how mobile journalism, data dashboards, and interactive digital features can elevate solutionoriented stories. Discusses emerging trends, the role of artificial intelligence, and the longterm sustainability of producing constructive, democratic news. As audiences avoid negative news and public risk perceptions fracture across polarized media ecologies, journalists are being called upon to tell engaging and optimistic stories about the future.
