Author Profile

Benjamin Carter is a distinguished historian, cartographer, and academic whose lifelong fascination with maps has shaped the landscape of modern geographical scholarship. Holding a Ph.D. in Historical Geography from Oxford University and a Master of Science in Cartography and Geovisualization from the University of Amsterdam, Dr. Carter has spent over two decades unearthing the human stories hidden within ancient lines and grids. His extensive career spans both the field and the classroom. He has served as a Senior Research Fellow at the Royal Geographical Society and has led multiple international archival expeditions to digitize and preserve vulnerable, centuries-old maritime charts in Europe and Southeast Asia. Currently a Professor of Geography and Archival Studies, he has published over thirty peer-reviewed papers on the evolution of spatial representation and regularly consults for global museums and cultural heritage organizations. In The History of Cartography, Dr. Carter synthesizes his immense technical expertise and deep historical insight. He masterfully demonstrates that maps have never been mere tools for navigation, but are instead powerful expressions of political power, cultural identity, and human ambition. As a dedicated professor, he teaches advanced courses in anthropology, archaeology, and historical geography. He has successfully led academic research initiatives and faculty learning communities focused on open scholarship and accessible historical data. The History of Cartography, Dr. Carter masterfully synthesizes his background in archaeology and geography, shifting the perspective of maps from mere navigation tools to vital cultural, political, and artistic artifacts. In recent years, his research has shifted toward historical geography and advanced mapping techniques. He uses LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) data, open-source software, and GIS tools to analyze and map how human activities changed historical landscapes.

About The Book

To open the pages of The History of Cartography is not merely to read a book, but to step into a vast, paper-built labyrinth where humanity has spent millennia trying to anchor its soul to the earth. It is a monument to our deepest obsession: the desire to see where we are, to look down from an impossible height, and to assert that we belong. Cartography is often mistaken for a science of cold measurement, but this history reveals it as an act of pure, defiant imagination. Before there were satellites and precise instruments, maps were tapestries woven from equal parts mathematics and mythology. To draw a map was to perform an act of sorcery, conjuring the world out of the void. Sailors traced the coastlines not just with ink, but with their fears, populating the deep oceans with sea monsters and shifting islands. Emperors drew borders not to reflect reality, but to invent it, carving lines through mountains and rivers to claim ownership over places they would never walk. Every map captured in this grand history is a mirror of the human mind at a specific point in time. In the medieval Mappa Mundi, geography is secondary to divinity; Jerusalem sits at the center of the world, and time and space blur together as the Garden of Eden shares a canvas with real-world Mediterranean ports. In ancient Marshallese stick charts, lines of palm fronds and shells map the invisible rhythm of ocean swells, proving that a map does not need to look like land to guide a traveler home. This history reminds us that humans have always been desperate to conquer the unknown. When the mapmakers reached the edge of what they knew, they did not leave it blank.
