About The Book

The Sociology of Deviant Behavior provides a comprehensive exploration of how societies define, interpret, and respond to behaviors that depart from accepted social norms. The book examines the concept of deviance from a sociological perspective, emphasizing that what is considered deviant is shaped by cultural values, historical contexts, and social institutions rather than being inherently wrong or universal. It introduces readers to the major theoretical perspectives, including functionalism, conflict theory, symbolic interactionism, social control theory, strain theory, and labeling theory, while illustrating their application through contemporary examples and empirical research. The book also investigates the relationship between deviance, crime, inequality, social control, and social change, highlighting the influence of family, education, media, religion, politics, and the legal system in shaping patterns of conformity and nonconformity. Special attention is given to emerging issues such as cybercrime, digital deviance, globalization, youth culture, substance abuse, and the impact of technology on social behavior. Combining theoretical insights with practical case studies, research methods, and policy discussions, this book serves as a valuable resource for students, researchers, educators, and practitioners. It encourages critical thinking about the complex nature of deviance and promotes a deeper understanding of its significance in maintaining, challenging, and transforming contemporary societies.
