Author Profile

Dr. Peter Kelvin a visionary architect and theorist, writes Urban Design and Planning through a deeply personal lens. Dr. Kelvin's journey into urban design and planning is rooted in a fascination with human behavior. Growing up in a sprawling, car-centric metropolis, he spent his childhood observing how isolating concrete environments affected community interaction. This frustration fueled his academic pursuit of architecture and urban ecology. After completing his doctorate at the Institute of Urban Composition, he spent a decade working directly with city governments to retrofit declining industrial districts. His goal was to transform underutilized lots into vibrant, pedestrian-friendly networks of green spaces. He wanted to understand how street layouts, building facades, and public squares fundamentally affect the happiness and health of the people who inhabit them. Synthesizing his fieldwork and academic research, Dr. Kelvin published his seminal book, The Responsive City: Designing for People in a Changing Climate. The book quickly became essential reading in planning and urban studies programs worldwide. It bridges the gap between rigid legislative zoning and organic human experiences. His core philosophy emphasizes that design must mean more than following building regulations; it must put the human experience-and nature-centric problem solving-back at the heart of city planning. Now an Emeritus Professor, Dr. Kelvin focuses on training the next generation of architects and urban planners. His methodologies for gathering public input and integrating green infrastructure continue to influence modern municipal planning globally.

About The Book

Planning is a profession and, even more, a way of thinking, which links the best possible information to choices facing communities and regions. As a result, planning is an academic discipline that overlaps with several other fields. Planning is also fundamental to democracy, involving many citizens and elected officials. Students and future citizens are at the beginning of a lifetime of making choices about the future of the built environment. Urban design and planning shape the built environment to create functional, livable, and sustainable communities. While related, they have distinct focuses: urban planning manages broad land-use policies, zoning, and long-term city growth, while urban design handles the physical aesthetics, layout, and localized development of specific public spaces. This comprehensive book provides an essential, end-to-end guide to shaping modern cities. It bridges theory and practice, equipping architects, planners, and students with the critical tools needed to build sustainable, equitable, and vibrant urban environments. This book provides an overview of the historical forces and contemporary theories that define the modern city. It covers the foundational vocabulary, goals, and multidisciplinary nature of urban design. This book examines the physical anatomy of settlements, including density, building heights, massing, zoning, and neighborhood grain. It explores how spatial structures dictate how a city functions and evolves. Focuses on creating inclusive, complete neighborhoods. This book covers affordable housing strategies, community-driven design, and socio-cultural factors that influence residential environments. Explores the design of the "public realm"-streets, plazas, and parks.
