Author Profile

Nolan Matthews is a visionary musicologist, cognitive neuroscientist, and former symphonic conductor whose life’s work has been dedicated to decoding the invisible threads that bind sound to the human soul. Widely regarded as one of the most profound sonic philosophers of the twenty-first century, Matthews has spent over three decades exploring the intersection of resonance, psychology, and anthropological history. Matthews’ academic journey began at the prestigious Juilliard School, where he graduated summa cum laude with a Master of Music in Orchestral Conducting. While leading elite ensembles across Europe, he became fascinated not just by how musicians play, but by what happens inside the minds of the people listening. Driven by an insatiable desire to understand the primal power of melody, he pivoted toward the sciences, eventually earning a Ph.D. in Cognitive Neuroscience from Oxford University, focusing specifically on neuromusicology and the brain’s neuroplastic response to acoustic frequencies. Rather than confining himself to laboratory walls or concert halls, Matthews spent years embedded in diverse cultural landscapes. He has mapped the rhythm patterns of communal ritual drumming in sub-Saharan Africa, documented the ancient Vedic chanting traditions in the monasteries of the Himalayas, and collaborated with Silicon Valley engineers to study how binary soundscapes can alleviate severe trauma. This rare synthesis of elite artistic mastery, rigorous clinical science, and global field research gives him an unparalleled authority on the subject.

About The Book

Why Music Matters is a profound, intellectually gripping defense of music’s social value and its complex relationship with history, society, and the human self. Far from treating music as a simple luxury, a passing distraction, or a commercial commodity, this book serves as an urgent reminder of why the chords and rhythms woven into our daily lives possess the unique capacity to shape our collective destiny. It is a rare work that bridges the gap between academic depth and human passion, challenging us to look at our playlists not just as collections of songs, but as mirrors of our shared struggles, inequalities, and triumphs. The book positions music as an arena where the vital questions of social power are contested. While society frequently devalues artistic forms in favor of purely economic or "practical" practices, the author presents a historically and sociologically informed critique of how music actually operates in modern communities. Music does not exist in a vacuum. The book addresses an essential duality: while song has the sublime power to nurture sociability, evoke deep commonality, and foster profound human well-being, it is simultaneously weaponized to exploit, divide, and reinforce deep-seated social inequalities. By fearlessly interrogating this ambivalence, the narrative moves away from starry-eyed sentimentality, offering instead a sharp, realistic appraisal of how the music industry, politics, and culture intersect. At the core of the text is a philosophical inquiry into selfhood and intimacy. The book argues that music must be understood in relation to human beings considered holistically—as complex selves and persons, rather than merely isolated, distressed individuals.
