Dr. Stephens J. Mathis joined the Department of Psychology as an Assistant Professor in July 2020. He received his undergraduate degree in Neuroscience from Brown University, then conducted three years of translational research at Massachusetts General Hospital developing imaging biomarkers of neurodegenerative disease. He completed his PhD in Neuroscience at The University of Texas at Austin studying value-based decision making and behavioral change. He then completed postdoctoral training at Columbia University before moving to Chicago. Dr. Mathis's research focuses on the cognitive and neural mechanisms by which relational memory contributes to decision making. Although it may seem obvious that many decisions rely on memory, how memories enter the decision process and the brain mechanisms that support such a process remain unknown. Abnormal psychology is concerned with understanding the nature, causes, and treatment of mental disorders. The topics and problems within the field of abnormal psychology surround us every day. We have only to pick up a newspaper, flip through a magazine, surf the web, or sit through a movie to be exposed to some of the issues that clinicians and researchers deal with on a day-to-day basis. Abnormal psychology can also be found much closer to home. The issues of abnormal psychology capture our interest, demand our attention, and trigger our concern. They also compel us to ask various questions about mental health and eventually about life and the society. Abnormal psychology of social behavior studies actions that deviate from cultural norms, causing personal distress, dysfunction, or danger, often analyzed using the "4 Ds": deviance, distress, dysfunction, and danger. It examines how social, cultural, and cognitive factors cause maladaptive behavior, rather than just biological, requiring context-sensitive assessment. Social psychology and abnormal psychology are closely related as both explore human thoughts, emotions, and behaviors, though from different perspectives. Social psychology focuses on how individuals behave in social situations, while abnormal psychology examines behaviour that deviate from what is considered normal or healthy. Both fields consider the influence of external factors-such as societal norms, peer pressure, and cultural expectations-on behaviour and mental processes. For example, social psychology studies how group dynamics and social pressure can lead individuals to behave in ways that they normally wouldn't, such as in Asch's conformity experiment or Milgram's obedience study. Similarly, abnormal psychology investigates how extreme social influence or isolation can contribute to mental health issues, such as anxiety disorders or depression. A socially withdrawn person may not necessarily have a psychological disorder, but if the withdrawal becomes persistent and interferes with daily life, it could indicate an underlying abnormal psychological condition. Both fields study human behaviour and the factors that influence it. Social psychology examines how external social factors shape behaviour, while abnormal psychology explores how internal and external influences contribute to psychological distress. Both fields also recognize that behaviour can be shaped by situational and environmental factors. For instance, stressful social environments can contribute to the development of mental health issues, and certain mental health conditions can affect how individuals interact with others in social settings. Additionally, both disciplines apply psychological principles to real-world problems. Social psychologists work in areas like advertising, law enforcement, and public relations to understand how people respond to persuasion, authority, and group dynamics. Abnormal psychologists work in clinical settings, schools, and research institutions to develop effective treatments for mental disorders and promote mental well-being.
