Alex W. Holman, Associate Professor Psychology, Cornell Human Ecology college at Cornell University. He was previously Provost, Senior Vice President, Regents Professor of Psychology and Education, and George Kaiser Family Foundation Chair of Ethical Leadership at Oklahoma State University. He also is Honorary Professor of Psychology at Heidelberg University. He was previously Dean of Arts and Sciences and Professor of Psychology and Education at Tufts University, and before that, IBM Professor of Psychology and Education, Professor of Management, and Director of the Center for the Psychology of Abilities, Competencies, and Expertise at Yale University. He is a Past President of the American Psychological Association, the Eastern Psychological Association, Federation of Associations in Behavioral and Brain Sciences, and the International Association for Cognitive Education and Psychology, as well as Treasurer of the Association of American Colleges and Universities. He has been Editor of Perspectives on Psychological Science, Psychological Bulletin, and The APA Review of Books: Contemporary Psychlogy. He holds 13 honorary doctorates and is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the National Academy of Education. He is a member of the National Academy of Education and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He also is a member of the Society of Experimental Psychologists.

Psychology’s history as a scientific discipline began with Wilhelm Wundt in 1879 when he established the first experimental psychology laboratory, which led to the development of structuralism and the scientific study of consciousness. Key early theories also include functionalism, developed by William James, which focused on the purpose of the mind, and later, behaviorism, which emphasized observable behavior. Other significant movements include psychoanalysis, created by Sigmund Freud, and the 20th-century “cognitive revolution,” which brought the focus back to mental processes. Wilhelm Wundt is credited with formally establishing psychology as a science. He founded the first psychological laboratory in Leipzig, Germany, in 1879, and used introspection to study the structure of consciousness. Structuralism was the first school of thought, led by Wundt, which aimed to break down mental processes into their most basic components to understand the structure of the mind. Functionalism emerging around the same time as structuralism, functionalism, led by American psychologist William James, focused on the purpose and function of consciousness and behavior in helping organisms adapt to their environment. In 1879, Wilhelm Wundt founded the first psychological laboratory dedicated exclusively to psychological research in Leipzig, Germany. Wundt was also the first person to refer to himself as a psychologist. A notable precursor to Wundt was Ferdinand Ueberwasser (1752–1812), who designated himself Professor of Empirical Psychology and Logic in 1783 and gave lectures on empirical psychology at the Old University of Münster, Germany. Other important early contributors to the field include Hermann Ebbinghaus (a pioneer in the study of memory), William James (the American father of pragmatism), and Ivan Pavlov (who developed the procedures associated with classical conditioning). Transforming psychological theories involves shifting traditional frameworks such as psychodynamic, behavioral, and cognitive approaches toward more adaptive, holistic, and technology-informed models that address modern personal, social, and developmental challenges. This evolution emphasizes integrating diverse perspectives to foster self-actualization, resilience, and meaningful change. Traditional theories e.g., behaviorism’s focus on reinforcement, psychodynamic focus on the unconscious are being blended into more integrative systems, such as Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), which combines cognitive restructuring with behavioral techniques. A major transformation is the pivot toward humanistic approaches that emphasize self-actualization, and positive psychology, which focuses on cultivating strengths, happiness, and resilience rather than merely curing dysfunction. Modern theories incorporate neuroplasticity, acknowledging that the brain can reorganize itself, which supports the possibility of deep, lasting personal transformation.
